Tate Modern

The Tate Modern redevelopment and improvements have now been completed for the galleries external area.

Overview

We were contracted by Mace to create a new external space for the iconic Tate Modern on London’s Southbank. Our task was to develop a more accessible and social area for the galleries patrons as well as members of the public, also focusing on easy accessibility for those with disabilities.

Working on various areas of Tate’s external space our programme for this project was varied and diverse. We transformed the West building with soft landscaping designs featuring communal spaces, installing granite benches and extensive concrete work to complement the architecture of the building and turbine hall. Cycles stands, bollards and bins were also fixed to ensure a convenient, safe and clean environment.

To soften the hard landscaping and architecture we planted a variation of mature trees and plants and by night the space is illuminated by a bespoke lighting scheme.

This project required close coordination and care due to its location on the Southbank, working alongside the world-famous gallery that welcomes over 5 million visitors a year and remained open throughout the works.

We are extremely pleased with the final outcome and now this space can be used and enjoyed by these visitors.
