Volunteering Week at Abbey Hub Helps to Improve Inclusive Play

Volunteering Group - Mace UCL East

Last week Maylim’s UCL East project team joined forces with client Mace to take part in a volunteering week for a local community project.

The Glyn Hopkin Abbey Hub is located in Stratford and is a neighbourhood play and community club run by Ambition Aspire Achieve (AAA). The centre provides an inclusive play space for children, young people and families living in the local community. Their services include after-school and holiday clubs, as well as disability specific activities.

Having re-opened in August, after a temporary closure due to COVID, the Abbey Hub were looking to complete some much-needed improvements and renovations to their outdoor space. Working alongside other contractors from the UCL East project, we were delighted to volunteer our skills and expertise to help to make these changes happen.

Tasks included; various improvements to the garden and playground areas, and building a new greenhouse, garden shed and chicken coop. The team also constructed a new concrete pathway and raised planters to provide better accessibility around the garden for wheelchair users.

Talking about the completed works, Kevin Jenkins Founder of AAA, said: “Sensational, brilliant, transformational. There are no words adequate enough to express our sincere gratitude for everyone’s hard work, kindness and generosity at Abbey Hub throughout last week.

On behalf of the disadvantaged, vulnerable and at-risk children and young people who all your efforts are making a real difference for – thank you! On behalf of all the children who are wheelchair users or have mobility difficulties, who can now access the entire site due to the magnificent path you have laid, thank you!
