Reimagining a London Landmark
On 20 July 2026, Grosvenor Square reopened to the public following a landmark transformation, the most significant redesign in its 300‑year history and the largest private investment in public green space in the West End in a generation. Led by Grosvenor, the project has reimagined London’s second‑largest garden square as an extraordinary urban garden: biodiverse, climate‑resilient and welcoming to all.
Maylim was proud to play a central role in delivering this ambitious public‑realm transformation, working within one of London’s most historic and prestigious settings to create a space that will be enjoyed for generations.
A Square Designed for People and Nature
The new Grosvenor Square is a celebration of seasonal planting, ecological richness and thoughtful design. More than 150,000 new plants and bulbs, 44 new trees and newly created wetland habitats bring life, colour and movement throughout the year. Soil health has been significantly improved, with aeration across an area twice the size of a Wembley pitch and capacity to absorb 1.4 million litres of stormwater, strengthening climate resilience in the heart of Mayfair.
The redesign was shaped by over 7,000 contributors, ensuring the square reflects the needs of residents, businesses, visitors and the wider community. The result is a greener, more accessible and more welcoming destination, fully step‑free, with improved lighting, seating, public toilets, water‑bottle filling stations and enhanced safety.
Respecting Heritage, Building for the Future
Grosvenor Square is a place of memory, and its transformation carefully preserves and enhances its historic monuments, including the Roosevelt Memorial, Eagle Squadrons Monument and the 9/11 Memorial. Seasonal planting has been designed to complement these spaces, with flowers blooming around the 9/11 Memorial each September.
A new education centre, operated by London Wildlife Trust and funded by The Westminster Foundation, will offer programmes for children and adults focused on biodiversity, climate change and the square’s rich history.
Delivering Excellence in a Highly Sensitive Environment
Working in Grosvenor Square demanded more than technical expertise, it required sensitivity, collaboration and deep respect for the people and businesses who call Mayfair home. Surrounded by some of London’s most iconic hotels, Maylim adapted construction methods, sequencing and communication to minimise disruption and maintain the calm, premium character of the square.
Noise, access, deliveries and daily operations were managed with precision and empathy. Our teams worked closely with neighbouring hotels, residents and local stakeholders to ensure every stage of construction was carried out with care.
Two new pavilions were constructed within an extensive mature root system of London plane trees. This required stringent surveying, vacuum excavation and meticulous construction techniques to ensure zero impact on the established roots.
The project was delivered through the fourth wettest winter in history and completed during a heatwave, demonstrating the resilience, adaptability and commitment of the Maylim team.
A New Destination at the Heart of Mayfair
The reopening of Grosvenor Square marks an exciting moment for Mayfair. The transformed garden provides a new reason to visit, spend time in the neighbourhood and experience one of London’s most iconic public spaces. It is a place to pause, reconnect with nature and enjoy a landscape designed for people, biodiversity and future generations.
