Meet the Team: Lewis Ingham
Sustainability and Environmental Manager
As Lewis Ingham approaches six months with Maylim, he is already helping to shape the company’s sustainability ambitions for the future. As Sustainability and Environmental Manager, Lewis combines technical expertise with a passion for reducing carbon impact, working closely with project teams to embed sustainable thinking across every stage of delivery.
Can you tell us about your role and the impact you’re helping to make across the business?
“I sit within the SHEQ team and support our project teams on carbon assessment, social value, environmental compliance, and maintaining our ISO 14001 system. Day to day, that means everything from quantifying the materials and energy that go into what we build, keeping our waste and environmental reporting in order, to assisting in work-winning by showcasing Maylim’s in-house sustainability performance and capabilities. I am currently focused on defining an organisational-level sustainability strategy that will allow us to track year-on-year improvements in key areas we have identified as critical to our organisational sustainability ambitions: Climate Change, Environmental Protection, Resource Efficiency, Supply Chain Integration, Our People, and Community Impact.”
Your career has spanned both the assessment and delivery sides of sustainability. What path led you to where you are today?
“My background spans across both sides of sustainability in construction, assessing it and delivering it. I spent the early part of my career at BRE as a technical auditor on the BREEAM certification scheme and later as a BREEAM assessor, reviewing projects against industry-leading sustainability standards, before moving into a delivery role where I could directly shape environmental performance through carbon and energy modelling.
My main interest is in carbon: measuring a scheme’s embodied and whole-life impact and finding practical ways to reduce it. At Maylim, I am focused on benchmarking our organisational carbon and identifying ways to reduce it. It’s a developing area with significant potential for expansion, and being hands-on with it on real projects is exactly where I want to be.”
What is it about Maylim that makes you proud to be part of the team?
“What makes me proud to work here is that Maylim gives sustainability a real place in the business. Reducing the impact of construction is one of the industry’s hardest problems, and instead of treating it as a reporting exercise, the company has given me room to benchmark where we stand and improve on live projects. Being somewhere that treats that as core to how it works, not an afterthought, is exactly where I want to be.”
When you’re not focused on sustainability and construction, how do you like to spend your time?
“A few things, I’m big into cooking, and I like buying a new cookbook and working through it from start to finish rather than picking off a couple of recipes. Outside of the kitchen, I cycle a fair amount, and I go to live music whenever I can.”
As Maylim continues to strengthen its sustainability journey, Lewis is excited to be part of the challenge, bringing both expertise and enthusiasm to the role, on and off the project site.
