Exchange Square Awarded City Building of the Year 2023
Exchange Square has been awarded the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects (WCCA) City Building of the Year Award for 2023. This award is a distinguished recognition of excellence, celebrating architecture’s pivotal role in enriching the Square Mile’s civic life.
British Land appointed Maylim as Principal Contractor for the 1.5-acre scheme. The scheme sits in the heart of Broadgate, London’s largest pedestrianised neighbourhood. The multi-award-winning scheme commenced works in December 2020 and reopened to the public in early 2022.
Designed by DSDHA, the revitalised space has undergone a remarkable transformation into a vibrant public realm. It boasts four times more green space than before. Bordered by the grand structural arch of Exchange House, the landscape showcases a curved metal pavilion and lush green roof. It further encompasses sprawling lawns and birch trees providing shaded retreats, captivating artwork and serene water pools. New seating areas provide views over Liverpool Street Station platforms.
The City Building of the Year Judges’ Report comments: “Exchange Square is an exemplary piece of urban design, landscape and architecture by DSDHA, transforming the area between the back of Liverpool Street Station and the spectacular Exchange House building, part of the original Broadgate development. The building is now at grade following a remodelling of the entire space to provide easier routing with terraced seating, which is already hugely successful in attracting both workers and locals.”
To mark this achievement, on Thursday, 26th October, the team attended the plaque unveiling ceremony by Rt Hon. The Lord Mayor.
