St Helen’s Square

St Helen’s Square is one of the area’s largest open public spaces we were delighted to lead this project and transform the space for British Land / Aviva.

As Principal Contractor, Maylim were heavily involved in the design development for the project including full design and build. Our design team produced 3D models of all structural elements to assist with planning and design. Maylim’s remit included over 3000m2 of granite paving, installation of raised granite benches and planters, as well as the construction of reinforced concrete plenum which included a suspended roof featuring soft landscaping elements. We also installed a bespoke lighting scheme which included an 18m powder-coated ‘Maypole’ feature structure. Aside from the hard-landscaping elements, a fully irrigated soft landscaping design was also planted.

Working over a live commercial office space with a busy public interface provided us with many logistical challenges. With the projects central location within the City of London site storage was minimal, therefore it was essential that all orders and site deliveries were accurate and co-ordinated accordingly.

The space is now vibrant, functional and contemporary – an ode to the surrounding architecture. The square is open and inviting, with green garden spaces and plenty of seating areas which, in its bustling and busy city location, can be enjoyed and utilised by the local community.

Whilst working on this project Maylim registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme. We were delighted to be awarded 4.5 stars and have since been nominated for a Gold Award by The City of London at the 2018 Considerate Constructors Awards. The nomination recognises that the code of good practice has been consistently adhered to and celebrates a sense of pride and consideration for the public surrounding the project.
