Lancer Square

Lancer Square is a sophisticated residential-led mixed-use development situated in the heart of Kensington.

Overview

Lancer Square comprises four blocks of private and affordable apartments, office space and retail units at ground level. Principal Contractor Mace contracted Maylim to complete the external works package for the project.

Maylim was responsible for creating the garden square, providing a high-quality public space. Anchored at the heart of the development and in the exact historic location as the military centre of Kensington Barracks, the square presents a beautiful communal green space inspired by the site’s palatial and horticultural heritage.

The influence of the palace’s courtyards, orangery and sunken garden can be seen in the courtyard grid and elements of the plantings. The square comprises a diverse planting scheme with mature trees creating a well-established landscape. Raised planters and seating areas overlook the water feature and lawn area, providing an appealing and relaxing environment for residents and visitors alike.

Maylim’s remit included the paved areas for vehicular access and the intricate works to the garden square, including paving, retaining walls and planters finished Laurel Bank sandstone. The centrepiece is a contemporary water feature and bespoke stone benches. Figurative sculptures, inspired by the stories of Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan, playfully look down upon a larger abstract sculpture inspired by rotated forms of the garden grid.

Maylim was also responsible for section 278 works to the pavements and streets enclosing Lancer Square for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
