Battersea Power Station – Phase Two
The long-awaited redevelopment of the iconic Battersea Power Station is now complete.
Overview
Since its closure almost forty years ago, there has been much speculation regarding the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station. Now, after ten years of development, the Grade II listed building has opened to the public for the first time in its history. The completion of this visionary project has created an exciting and vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood.
The power station’s highly anticipated transformation has not only seen life injected back into one of London’s most iconic buildings but also the 42-acre formerly derelict land surrounding it. With LDA Design at the helm, the mission was to create a place for people and nature. Wellbeing, sustainability, inclusion, heritage, and biodiversity were all fundamental factors for the landscape design.
Maylim has been a key contractor for the master plan since 2015. The first phase, Circus West Village, opened to the public in 2017. Following this, Maylim turned its focus to the second phase of works, the landscape directly surrounding the power station.
The landscape scheme blends seamlessly with phase one, thanks to the continuation of critical features and planting schemes. The pathways adopt the same tonal palette from Circus West, using a three-stone granite mix, feature banding and resin-bound gravel.
The 2.4-ha riverfront park stretches between the River Thames and the north elevation of the power station. A series of steps and stages lead visitors down to the riverfront promenade, introducing a stretch of the Thames that has never been open to the public before.
The recreational park area incorporates sprawling lawns, mature trees, wildflower turf, shrubs and herbaceous planting. Bespoke bleacher precast seating, street furniture and lighting installation across the project enable the space to host various community events, both night and day.
