Overview

Maylim is proud to look back on the successful delivery of Stonecutter Court a highly detailed landscape transformation set within one of the City of London’s most constrained historic courtyards. Completed between December 2024 and May 2025, the project showcases our capability to deliver complex public realm enhancements within tight urban environments, navigating severe access limitations and intricate logistics to create a distinctive, high‑quality space.

Working for CO‑RE / Allianz and Ivanhoé Cambridge JV, with Mace as Principal Contractor, and in collaboration with Gross Max (Landscape Architect) and TP Bennett (Architect), we delivered a 2,400m² courtyard scheme valued at £0.9m.

A Distinctive Landscape in a Compact Urban Setting

Stonecutter Court has been transformed into a welcoming public space defined by a rich palette of materials and a striking vertical landscape feature. Key elements included:

  • Scoutmoor and clay brick block paving to establish a robust and characterful hard landscape.
  • Custom Corten steel planters and granite benches to introduce warmth, texture and durability.
  • A 15‑metre greenwall trellis, creating a dramatic vertical landscape that enhances visual interest, improves acoustics and contributes to environmental performance.
  • Soft landscaping with specimen trees and layered planting schemes.
  • Integrated lighting columns to support evening use and enhance ambience.
  • Street furniture, including chairs and cycle stands, to encourage dwell time and support diverse user needs.

Paving, drainage channels and stepped access were carefully coordinated across four building entrances, ensuring seamless transitions between the courtyard and surrounding circulation routes.

Delivering Within Severe Access Constraints

Access logistics defined every aspect of the Stonecutter Court programme. The courtyard could only be reached either through the building interior, or from the live Farringdon Street footpath.

This required meticulous planning, creative problem‑solving and continuous coordination with building management and local stakeholders.

The installation of the 15‑metre greenwall trellis was particularly challenging. With no internal access for lifting equipment, the entire operation was delivered from a single scissor lift positioned on the public footpath. Our team managed this safely and efficiently while maintaining pedestrian flow and minimising disruption to building operations.

Detailed logistics planning, material sequencing and real‑time adaptation were essential to maintaining programme momentum in such a constrained environment.

Recognition and Awards

The completed Stonecutter Court has been widely praised and has received notable recognition, including:

  • Silver Certificate of Excellence – Flowers in the City Campaign
  • Public Vote Winner – Archello International Hi‑Rise Office Building of the Year
  • https://www.co-re.co.uk/news/stonecutter-awarded-archello-office-building-of-the-year-2025

These accolades reflect the quality of the finished space and the collaborative effort behind its delivery.

Key Challenges and Lessons Learned

Stonecutter Court reinforced the importance of early engagement and creative planning for compact urban projects. Key learnings included:

  • Access logistics as a primary risk driver — tight environments require unconventional approaches and flexible sequencing
  • The value of early coordination with building management — essential for managing internal access routes and operational constraints
  • Equipment selection as a critical factor — choosing the right plant and lifting solutions can de‑risk delivery in confined spaces
  • The need for dynamic, real‑time decision‑making — especially when working from live public footpaths or shared spaces

These insights have strengthened our approach to future schemes in similarly constrained historic contexts.

A Project That Demonstrates Precision, Collaboration and Craftsmanship

Stonecutter Court stands as a testament to Maylim’s expertise in delivering high‑quality public realm projects within some of London’s most challenging urban environments. The completed courtyard now provides a vibrant, welcoming space for building users and visitors, blending robust materials, soft landscaping and a dramatic vertical green feature to create a unique urban retreat.
